Ice Chipper

#23

OK, it may be somewhat of a stretch to call this a knife, but I gave it a serial number anyway. After a nasty ice storm at my in-laws’ house one Christmas, I decided that my father-in-law could use a heavier duty ice chipper.

The blade is 1/4″ thick O-1 tool steel and the blade holder is 304 stainless. Part of the design was that I needed to be able to fly with this in my checked luggage so I decided to use standard steel pipe (purchased locally) for the handle.

Here you can see the comparison to the original light duty ice chipper. The steel pipe on the new chipper also adds a nice bit of additional mass which would have been very helpful for busting through the 3″ sheet of ice that inspired this project
